"Icefields and an estimated 100.000 glaciers cover 5% of Alaska’s surface. The glaciers begin in clouds such as these in the Chugach Mountains. Over time, falling snow piles up in mountain recesses, and ever so slowly the weight of accumulating snow compact lower layers into dense ice. When the ice becomes thick enough, it starts to remove downhill. Shot made on a flight from Anchorage to Amsterdam. For more Alaska and US web galleries: www.michelhammann-photography.com " |
